Dwayne John Bravo, born on October 7, 1983, in Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, is a highly regarded former West Indies cricketer. Primarily known as a right-arm seam bowling all-rounder, Bravo demonstrated proficiency in aggressive lower-order batting and specialized in death bowling in Twenty20 cricket during his career. He represented the West Indies in 40 Test matches, 164 One Day International matches, and 91 T20 International matches from 2004 to 2021. Domestically, Bravo played for Trinidad and Tobago starting in 2002 and was a key player for various global T20 franchises.
Bravo’s international career highlights include being a central figure in the West Indies teams that secured victories in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, and the 2016 ICC World Twenty20. His ability to deliver impactful performances in crucial moments, including taking the winning catch in the 2012 T20 World Cup, cemented his reputation. He initially retired from international cricket in October 2018 but made a comeback in December 2019 for the 2020 T20 World Cup, retiring again from international duties in November 2021. He continued to play in league cricket worldwide until his final retirement from all forms of cricket on September 27, 2024.
His franchise career is notably marked by his contributions to the Indian Premier League (IPL), particularly with the Chennai Super Kings. He played for Mumbai Indians for the first three seasons before joining Chennai Super Kings in 2011. He was instrumental in their success, earning the Purple Cap twice for being the leading wicket-taker, in 2013 and 2015. Bravo also played for Gujarat Lions and was later re-signed by Chennai Super Kings. Post-retirement from playing, he assumed roles as mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders and head coach for other Knight Riders Group teams including Trinbago Knight Riders, further solidifying his enduring presence in the sport.
