Edgar Eugene Roland Jr., born on August 3, 1963, is an American singer-songwriter and musician recognized for his work as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for the rock band Collective Soul. His musical journey began with early influences from artists like Elton John. Roland pursued formal music education, studying songwriting and guitar at Berklee College of Music for a year. Following his studies, he spent eight years as a lead engineer and producer at Real 2 Reel Studios in Stockbridge, Georgia.
Roland was involved in the local Georgia music scene from the early 1980s, joining bands like Ed-E in 1985 and Marching Two-Step in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this period, he released an independent album titled “Ed-E Roland” in 1991, which served to demonstrate his skills in composing, recording, and producing original music. After a brief period under the name Brothers & Brides, Roland established Collective Soul.
Collective Soul initially released “Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid” independently in 1993, a compilation of demos Roland created at Real 2 Reel Studios. The song “Shine” gained traction on college radio, leading to Atlantic Records signing Collective Soul in 1993. This brought the band significant visibility, leading to international re-release of their album in 1994. In addition to his work with Collective Soul, Roland formed a side project, Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project, releasing their debut album “Devils ‘n Darlins” in 2013 and a second album, “Alder Lane Farm,” in 2017. He also released a solo album, “Anniversary,” in 2016, dedicated to his wife. Collective Soul has continued to release music, including “See What You Started by Continuing” (2015), “Blood” (2019), and “Vibrating” (2022).
