Jaime Stuart Meline, professionally known as El-P (shortened from El Producto), was born on March 2, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York City. He developed an early involvement with New York City’s hip-hop culture, forming the group Company Flow in 1992 with Mr. Len, whom he met after hiring him as a DJ for his 17th birthday. In 1993, Company Flow released their first single, “Juvenile Technique,” and with the addition of Bigg Jus, they released their debut EP, Funcrusher, in 1995. This EP sold over 30,000 copies independently, leading to the group signing with Rawkus Records and releasing the album Funcrusher Plus in 1997. Following disagreements with Rawkus, El-P founded his own record label, Definitive Jux, which became prominent with successful albums like Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein and Aesop Rock’s Labor Days.
Company Flow dissolved in 2001, and El-P released his debut solo album, Fantastic Damage, in 2002, which received critical acclaim. He continued to innovate with projects like High Water (2004), a jazz-fusion collaboration with the Blue Series Continuum, and his second solo album, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead (2007), which became his most commercially successful solo work. In 2012, after announcing Definitive Jux’s hiatus, El-P released his third solo album, Cancer 4 Cure, under Fat Possum Records. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2013 when he formed the hip-hop superduo Run the Jewels with Killer Mike, a collaboration that emerged after El-P produced Killer Mike’s album R.A.P. Music.
Run the Jewels has released four critically acclaimed, free albums: Run the Jewels (2013), Run the Jewels 2 (2014), Run the Jewels 3 (2016), and RTJ4 (2020), achieving widespread recognition and mainstream success. Beyond his group and solo work, El-P has a significant career as a producer and featured artist, contributing to albums by artists such as Aesop Rock, Cage, and Killer Mike. He has also ventured into film scoring, composing for the 2005 film Bomb the System and the 2020 biopic Capone. His music is characterized by dense, aggressive lyrical delivery, sci-fi themes, and intricate production.
