About

Evanescence was founded in 1994 in Little Rock, Arkansas, by singer Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. The duo initially recorded independent EPs and a demo CD, developing a local fanbase in Little Rock by performing acoustic sets. Lee’s musical vision involved blending cinematic, classical, and symphonic elements with metal, hard rock, and alternative music. The band secured a deal with Wind-up Records in 2001, leading to their debut studio album, “Fallen,” in 2003. This album, propelled by singles such as “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal,” became a global success, selling over four million copies in the US by January 2004 and earning the band two Grammy Awards.

Following Moody’s departure in 2003 due to creative differences, the band continued with Lee as the primary songwriter, collaborating with guitarist Terry Balsamo for their second album, “The Open Door,” released in 2006. This album achieved global sales of over six million copies and earned a Grammy nomination. After a hiatus, Evanescence became an independent band in 2014, working on new projects like “Synthesis” (2017), which featured orchestral and electronica arrangements of their existing material alongside new songs. Their fifth studio album, “The Bitter Truth,” released in 2021, reached top positions on various Billboard charts, demonstrating their continued relevance.

Over their career, Evanescence has experienced several lineup changes, evolving into a collaborative band structure. Their distinctive sound, combining rock, classical, and electronic elements, has been widely recognized. The band’s impact on music is noted for breaking into mainstream rock radio as a female-fronted act. With album sales exceeding 31.9 million units, Evanescence remains one of the best-selling hard rock and metal artists, actively touring and planning their sixth studio album.
