About

Foo Fighters, formed in Seattle in 1994, began as a solo project by Dave Grohl, formerly the drummer for Nirvana. His early work included recording the band’s eponymous debut album mostly by himself within six days. Following the album’s positive reception, Grohl assembled a full band, recruiting Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate, and Pat Smear, who had toured with Nirvana. The band’s first public performances commenced in February 1995, prior to the album’s release. This initial lineup marked the official start of Foo Fighters, laying the groundwork for their extensive career.

Over the subsequent decades, Foo Fighters experienced several lineup changes and released numerous commercially successful and critically acclaimed albums. Key milestones include the release of “The Colour and the Shape” in 1997, featuring hit singles such as “Monkey Wrench,” “Everlong,” and “My Hero.” The album was recorded amidst a lineup change, with Grohl re-recording most drum parts himself after William Goldsmith’s departure, and Taylor Hawkins joining as the new drummer. Pat Smear also briefly departed, replaced by Franz Stahl, who was later succeeded by Chris Shiflett before the recording of “There Is Nothing Left to Lose” in 1999. The band signed with RCA records, releasing hit singles like “Learn to Fly.” This period solidified their position in the rock music scene.

The band continued to evolve, releasing albums such as “One by One” (2002), “In Your Honor” (2005), and “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” (2007). Pat Smear returned as a full-time member during the recording of “Wasting Light” (2011), an album notable for being recorded in Dave Grohl’s garage using only analog equipment, which garnered five Grammy Awards. “Sonic Highways” (2014) was released alongside an HBO miniseries directed by Grohl, documenting its creation across eight American cities. “Concrete and Gold” (2017) was their second album to top the charts in the United States and officially welcomed touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee as a full member. Their latest works include “Medicine at Midnight” (2021) and “But Here We Are” (2023), the latter being their first album after the passing of long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022. Foo Fighters have received 15 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, showcasing their lasting impact on music.
