Joel David Smallbone (born June 5, 1984) and Luke James Smallbone (born October 22, 1986) are Australian-born brothers who immigrated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991 due to their father’s music promotion career. Growing up in a musical family, they initially supported their sister, Christian recording artist Rebecca St. James, before forming their own band. They started as “Joel & Luke,” then briefly “Austoville,” before adopting the name “For King & Country” in 2009, inspired by a British battle cry to reflect their mission to live for their faith and country.
The duo signed with Warner Music Group in 2009 and released their debut EP, “For King & Country: The EP,” in 2011. Their single “Busted Heart (Hold On to Me)” quickly rose to No.3 on Billboard’s Christian Songs chart, becoming the fastest-rising single in their genre that year. Their debut album, “Crave,” released in 2012, peaked at No.4 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart and No. 128 on the Billboard 200. The band continued their growth with their second studio album, “Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong.” in 2014, which earned them a Grammy Award. This period also saw them performing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and participating in the Winter Jam Tours in 2015 and 2016.
Over the years, For King & Country has expanded their reach beyond music. In 2016, Joel Smallbone starred in the feature film “Priceless” concerning human trafficking, for which the band also contributed music. Their 2018 album, “Burn the Ships,” achieved RIAA gold status and included the platinum-selling single “God Only Knows,” which had crossover success, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 and featuring collaborations with artists like Dolly Parton and Timbaland. The band has since released additional albums, including the full-length Christmas album “A Drummer Boy Christmas” (2020) and their fifth studio album, “What Are We Waiting For?” (2022), which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. In 2024, they released a biographical film, “Unsung Hero,” inspired by their family’s story, which grossed $21 million at the box office and won a Dove Award for Inspirational Movie of the Year. In October 2025, they released a new song “World on Fire” and have a documentary, “No Turning Back,” planned for Amazon Prime Video in November 2025, underlining their comprehensive impact across music and film.
