About

Gomez, an English indie rock band from Southport, Merseyside, formed in 1995. The band consists of Ian Ball (vocals, guitar), Paul Blackburn (bass), Tom Gray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitars), and Olly Peacock (drums, synths, computers). They are notable for having three vocalists and four songwriters, and their music blends blues, indie, alternative, rock, folk, psychedelic, and experimental elements. The band’s initial formation involved Ian Ball and Olly Peacock, who had played together since they were 14, later joined by Paul Blackburn and Tom Gray from college. Ian Ball subsequently met Ben Ottewell at Sheffield University, completing the lineup.

Gomez played their first gig in 1996 in Leeds. They initially did not have a formal name, but a sign intended for a friend named Gomez led to the audience assuming it was the band’s name, which was later adopted officially. The band recorded four-track demos in Peacock’s father’s garage during the summer of 1996. These demos were instrumental in securing a record deal with Hut Records (Virgin Records) in September 1997, after being distributed by their manager, Stephen Fellows, to various labels. Their unique approach of having record companies travel to their rehearsal studios for showcases, rather than performing in London, highlighted their distinct style and confidence.

Following their signing, Gomez released their debut album, “Bring It On,” in April 1998, which was self-produced and certified platinum. This success was followed by a season of English Festivals, including two performances at Glastonbury. In September 1998, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for “Bring It On,” marking a significant early career milestone. Their second album, “Liquid Skin” (1999), also achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching high positions on British and Australian charts and securing a platinum certification. Over their active years from 1997 to the present, Gomez has released seven studio albums and continued to perform live, with tour dates scheduled into late 2025.
