Kwon Ji-yong, professionally known as G-Dragon, born on August 18, 1988, in Seoul, South Korea, began his career at age six as part of the group Little Roo’ra. His early interest in hip-hop was sparked by the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan, leading him to take rap classes and participate in the Korean hip-hop album ‘Korean Hiphop Flex’ in 2001 at just 13 years old. He later trained for five years at SM Entertainment, focusing on dance, before signing with YG Entertainment. After rigorous training, he debuted in 2006 as the leader of the South Korean boy band BigBang, which quickly achieved global recognition and became one of the best-selling boy bands worldwide. His stage name, G-Dragon, derived from the pronunciation of ‘Ji’ as ‘G’ and ‘Yong’ meaning ‘dragon’ in Korean.
In 2009, G-Dragon launched his solo career with the album ‘Heartbreaker’, which was a commercial success, becoming the best-selling album by a Korean soloist at the time and earning him Album of the Year at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. He continued to broaden his musical projects, collaborating with bandmate T.O.P for the album ‘GD & TOP’ in 2010. His first EP, ‘One of a Kind’ (2012), featured hit singles like ‘One of a Kind,’ ‘Crayon,’ and ‘That XX,’ which topped various charts and secured him the Best Male Solo Artist award at the 14th Mnet Asian Music Awards. His influence extended beyond music into fashion and culture; he was named among Forbes’ 2030 Power Leaders for three consecutive years (2012–2014) and frequently appeared on Hypebeast’s list of 100 most influential people in fashion. After departing YG Entertainment in 2023, he signed with Galaxy Corporation under his real name, Kwon Ji-yong, and has announced plans for new music releases in 2024, including the album ‘Übermensch’ and the music variety program ‘Good Day.’ He has also been recognized with the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit for his contributions to Korean pop culture.
