About

Shelton Hank Williams, known professionally as Hank Williams III, was born on December 12, 1972, in Nashville, Tennessee. As the grandson of Hank Williams and son of Hank Williams Jr., he comes from a significant musical lineage. Early in his career, Williams primarily focused on playing drums in punk rock bands throughout the late 1980s and early to mid-1990s. A pivotal moment in his early life involved a family court order for child support for his son, Coleman Finchum, which prompted him to seek more stable employment. This led him to sign a contract with Nashville-based Curb Records.

His association with Curb Records began with the album “Three Hanks: Men with Broken Hearts,” released concurrently with his signing. This album cleverly combined recordings, creating the impression of three generations of Williams men performing together. The success of “Three Hanks” resulted in a Vocal Duo of the Year nomination by the Academy of Country Music in 1997. His first solo album, “Risin’ Outlaw,” was released in September 1999, achieving respectable sales and positive reviews despite Williams’s personal dislike for the record. Throughout his tenure with Curb Records, Williams also explored other musical avenues, playing bass guitar in the heavy metal band Superjoint Ritual (later Superjoint) and drums for the hardcore punk band Arson Anthem, formed with Phil Anselmo and Mike Williams.

Williams’s relationship with Curb Records was often contentious, marked by contractual disputes and unauthorized album releases. Notably, in 2006, after resolving a dispute, he released “Straight to Hell” as a two-disc set, including an uncensored version that was one of the first major-label country albums to carry a parental advisory warning. Following his departure from Curb Records, Williams transitioned to independent releases starting in 2011. He released multiple albums under his own label, Hank3 Records, through Megaforce Records, showcasing his diverse stylistic range with projects like “Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town,” “3 Bar Ranch Cattle Callin’,” and “Attention Deficit Domination.” His independent career continued with albums such as “Brothers of the 4×4” and “A Fiendish Threat” in 2013, further solidifying his unique position in the music industry.
