Iceage originates from Copenhagen, Denmark, forming in 2008 when the band members were approximately 17 years old. The band comprises Elias Bender Rønnenfelt on vocals and guitar, Johan Surrballe Wieth on guitar and backing vocals, Jakob Tvilling Pless on bass, Dan Kjær Nielsen on drums, and Casper Morilla on guitar, who joined in 2019. Their initial sound was characterized by post-punk, art punk, noise rock, and post-hardcore influences. The band signed with Escho for their debut 7″ release in 2009 and later added Tambourhinoceros in Denmark and Dais Records in the United States to their labels. What’s Your Rupture? Records facilitated their international releases. Their debut album, “New Brigade,” was released in January 2011 in Denmark and June 2011 in the U.S., marking their entry into the international music scene.
In February 2013, Iceage released their second studio album, “You’re Nothing,” after signing with the independent record label Matador Records. This album received positive reviews, including a four-star rating from Allmusic. The band continued their progression with their third studio album, “Plowing Into the Field of Love,” released in October 2014 by Matador. This release represented a shift in their musical direction, moving beyond their hardcore punk origins to incorporate a broader range of sounds and influences, including artists like Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. All three of these albums earned a nomination for IMPALA’s European Independent Album of the Year Award, highlighting their consistent artistic output and critical acclaim. On May 4, 2018, Iceage released their fourth album, “Beyondless,” through Matador, followed by their fifth album, “Seek Shelter,” on May 7, 2021. “Seek Shelter” was notable as their first album produced by an outside producer, Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, and marked the debut of Casper Morilla as a guitarist. The band has also released compilation albums, EPs, and singles throughout their career, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to musical creation and evolution.
