Jim Sturgess

Born in London and raised in Surrey, Jim Sturgess, whose full name is James Anthony Sturgess, initially developed a passion for music. From the age of eight, he secretly engaged with acting through local theatre, balancing this with joining a band at fifteen that performed in pubs. His academic pursuits at Salford University included a Higher National Diploma in Media Performance, where he connected with individuals interested in filmmaking, shifting his perception of acting as a viable career path. He began creating short films with friends and continued with theatre, notably performing a one-man show that led to his representation by an agent.

Moving back to London in 2000, Sturgess continued his musical endeavors with the band ‘Saint Faith’ while taking on minor television roles to support his passion. A turning point occurred in 2006 when he auditioned for the musical film “Across the Universe” (2007), securing the lead role of Jude. This breakthrough was followed by significant roles in “The Other Boleyn Girl” (2008) alongside Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, and the commercially successful “21” (2008), where he played Ben Campbell, a student who counts cards in Las Vegas. His portrayal of Dexter in “One Day” (2011), based on David Nicholls’ bestselling novel, further solidified his position in the industry.

Sturgess has consistently explored diverse roles across film and television, including “Cloud Atlas” (2012), “Geostorm” (2017), and the TV series “Hard Sun” (2018) and “Home Before Dark” (2020–2021). Parallel to his acting, Sturgess has maintained a strong commitment to music, writing and performing his own songs and collaborating with various artists. He performs under the moniker King Curious and has contributed music to several of his films, including “Crossing Over” and “Heartless.” His recent work includes the miniseries “Mix Tape” (2025) and upcoming projects like “4 Kids Walk Into a Bank,” set for release in 2026.
