About

George Virden Watsky was born in San Francisco, California, on September 15, 1986. He attended San Francisco University High School and later Emerson College, where he designed his own interdisciplinary studies program in Writing and Acting for the Screen and Stage. Watsky’s talents gained early recognition when he became the Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion and the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion in 2006. He began performing slam poetry at age 15, often incorporating political and social themes into his work, and was featured on Season Six, Episode Two of “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.” In 2009, his one-man show “Where the Magic Happens” was favorably reviewed by The Boston Globe.

Watsky transitioned into music, releasing his debut hip-hop album, “Watsky,” in 2009, followed by “Guilty Pleasures” in 2010. His career expanded significantly in 2011 with the viral YouTube video “Pale kid raps fast,” which garnered millions of views and led to an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” This rapid-fire rapping style became one of his distinctive trademarks. Subsequent albums, including “Cardboard Castles” (2013), “All You Can Do” (2014), “x Infinity” (2016), “Complaint” (2019), “Placement” (2020), and “Intention” (2023), showcased his evolution as a musical artist. His album “All You Can Do” reached number 33 on the Billboard 200.

Beyond music, Watsky has engaged in acting and writing. He appeared in Season 4 of “Arrested Development” in 2013 and in the film “Blindspotting” in 2018. Watsky also played several roles, including William Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe, in “Epic Rap Battles of History” videos. In 2016, he published “How to Ruin Everything,” a collection of essays that reached The New York Times Best Seller list. In 2020, Watsky set a Guinness World Record for the longest rapping marathon, freestyling for 33 hours, 33 minutes, and 19 seconds, raising over $140,000 for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
