About

John Maus, born on February 23, 1980, in Austin, Minnesota, is an American musician, composer, singer, and academic. His early exposure to music included Vangelis and early MTV, and as a teenager, he explored punk bands and computer music, finding inspiration in Nirvana and Syd Barrett. In 1998, Maus left Austin to study experimental music composition at the California Institute of the Arts. During this period, he befriended and collaborated with Ariel Pink (Ariel Rosenberg), which led him to develop a deeper interest in pop music. Maus produced his first two albums, “Songs” (2006) and “Love Is Real” (2007), using a cassette multi-track recorder and an early 1990s synthesizer sound bank. These initial releases were generally met with negative reviews upon their launch. However, a turning point came with his third album, “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves” (2011), which received positive critical attention and led to a re-evaluation of his earlier work, establishing him as a significant outsider artist.

Following the release of “Love Is Real,” Maus pursued higher education, receiving a scholarship to study political philosophy at the University of Hawaii, where he also worked as a lecturer. He continued his academic journey at the European Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland, earning a master’s degree. In 2014, he completed his 338-page dissertation, “Communication and Control,” which explored the impact of technology on social control, ultimately earning him a PhD in political science from the University of Hawaii. This academic background often intertwines with his musical identity, though Maus maintains he does not compose with specific theories in mind, instead aiming to explore “forgotten” electronic sounds and lyrical absurdities.

After a five-year hiatus from releasing new music and public appearances, during which he focused on his PhD and learned to build modular synthesizers, Maus returned with “Screen Memories” in 2017 and “Addendum” in 2018. He embarked on his first solo tour with a live band, which included his brother Joe Maus, who tragically passed away in 2018. His sixth studio album, “Later Than You Think,” is set for release in September 2025. Maus’s unique synthesis of baritone vocals, vintage synthesizers, and medieval church modes has garnered him a dedicated following and established him as a distinctive figure in contemporary synth-pop.
