After two acclaimed releases with Elektra Records, she and Jennifer Kimball dissolved the partnership without much fanfare, even downplaying the duo's.
Jonatha has co-written and/or produced songs with Katy Perry, The Courtyard Hounds, and Jessica Simpson. She's also written for four Disney films, numerous television shows, and she composed and performed the theme song for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse.

Jonatha Brooke, born January 23, 1964, in Illinois, is an American folk rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. She attended Shady Hill School and Commonwealth School in Massachusetts, graduating from Amherst College in 1985. Brooke began her career in the 1980s alongside Jennifer Kimball, forming the duo The Story. Their folk songs were characterized by witty wordplay and harmonies. They signed with Green Linnet, releasing “Grace in Gravity” in 1991, which was later re-released by Elektra Records. Their second album, “The Angel in the House,” was released in 1993.
In 1994, Brooke started her solo career. Her debut solo album, “Plumb” (1995), received positive reviews for its poignant songs. This was followed by “10 Cent Wings” in 1997. Facing changes in the music industry, she established her own label, Bad Dog Records, in 1999, to release “Jonatha Brooke Live.” She continued to release music independently, including “Steady Pull” (2001) and “Back in the Circus” (2004). Her songs have been featured in television shows like ABC’s “Once and Again” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” She also contributed songs to Disney’s “Return to Never Land” (2002) and wrote the theme for Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse.”
Brooke’s 2008 album, “The Works,” was a project inspired by Woody Guthrie’s unreleased lyrics. She explored his archives to adapt his writings into new songs. In 2014, she premiered her one-woman play, “My Mother Has 4 Noses,” off-Broadway, which explored her relationship with her mother and received critical acclaim. She released a companion CD of the same title. Her album “Midnight. Hallelujah.” was released in 2016, and she continued to release new music, including the EP “Imposter” in 2019 and “The Sweetwater Sessions” in 2020. Brooke has received several accolades, including the Overall Grand Prize at the 15th Annual IAMA in 2019 and an Independent Music Award in 2020.
