Keyshia Myeshia Johnson, born on October 15, 1981, in Oakland, California, experienced a challenging early life marked by her biological mother’s struggles with addiction and her father’s absence. She was adopted at age two by Leon and Yvonne Cole, changing her surname accordingly. Cole discovered her passion for music at a young age, recording background vocals for MC Hammer at 12 and forming a friendship with Tupac Shakur, who recognized her talent. Despite facing early personal hardships and an unsupportive adoptive mother regarding her musical aspirations, Cole moved to Los Angeles at 17 to pursue a music career. She initially worked with Bay Area artists and was almost part of a girl group before producer Damon Elliott encouraged her solo endeavors. In 2002, A&M Records’ A&R executive Ron Fair signed her after hearing her demo, providing mentoring in artist development.
Cole’s career formally launched with her first single, “Never,” in 2004, featured on the ‘Barbershop 2: Back in Business’ soundtrack. Her debut album, ‘The Way It Is’ (2005), achieved platinum certification and spawned top-ten hits like “Love” and “I Should Have Cheated.” This success led to her BET reality series, ‘Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is,’ which documented her life over three seasons and became highly viewed. Her second album, ‘Just Like You’ (2007), also went platinum, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and producing three number-one singles on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, including “Let It Go.” In 2008, her third album, ‘A Different Me,’ continued her commercial success with another platinum certification and top-ten hits. Cole continued to release successful albums, ‘Calling All Hearts’ (2010), ‘Woman to Woman’ (2012), and ‘Point of No Return’ (2014), all charting within the top ten. She also expanded her television presence with ‘Keyshia & Daniel: Family First’ (2012) and ‘Keyshia Cole: All In’ (2015).
In 2017, Cole joined the cast of VH1’s ‘Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood’ and released her seventh album, ’11:11 Reset.’ She hosted her own talk show, ‘One on One with Keyshia Cole,’ from 2019 to 2020. After signing with Primary Wave and BMG, she released the standalone single “I Don’t Wanna Be in Love” in 2021 under her imprint, Hearts and Stars. Cole starred in and executive-produced the Lifetime biographical documentary ‘Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story’ in 2023. She actively tours, with her most recent being the Love Hard Tour in 2024 and the upcoming The Way It Is 20th Anniversary Tour in 2025.
