Kim Petras was born on August 27, 1992, in Cologne, Germany, to a choreographer mother and an architect father. From an early age, she identified as a girl and began her medical gender transition at a young age, appearing on German television at 13 to discuss her experiences. At 16, she underwent sex reassignment surgery, reportedly becoming one of the youngest individuals globally to do so at the time. This early life experience significantly shaped her public identity and determination. She developed an interest in music during her teenage years and started recording, later moving to Los Angeles at 19 to pursue a music career.
Between 2016 and 2020, Petras released music independently under her own label, BunHead Records. Her debut international single, “I Don’t Want It at All,” released in 2017, gained significant attention, including a cameo from Paris Hilton in its music video. This led to a series of singles, dubbed “Era 1,” many of which charted on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart. In 2019, she released her debut full-length projects, “Clarity” and “Turn Off the Light,” both receiving critical acclaim. “Clarity” reached number seven on the Heatseekers Chart and number 26 on the Independent Albums chart, showcasing her growing artistic and commercial success.
In 2021, Petras signed with Republic Records, marking a significant step in her career. The collaboration with Sam Smith on “Unholy” in 2022 became a global hit, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made her the first openly transgender solo artist to top the US charts. In 2023, she and Sam Smith won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Unholy,” making her the second transgender woman to win a Grammy, further solidifying her status in the music industry. Her debut studio album, “Feed the Beast,” was released in 2023, followed by a world tour, confirming her transition to mainstream pop success.
