About

Kevin Smith, known professionally as Kojaque, was born in 1995 in Dublin, Ireland, and grew up in Cabra. His early life was marked by the loss of his father during his childhood. He attended St Declan’s College before pursuing fine art at the Dublin Institute of Technology, where he received the RHA Student Graduate Award in 2017. These formative experiences and his background in visual arts have influenced his distinctive approach to music and visuals.

Kojaque began his active career in 2015 with the release of his first single, “Midnight Flower.” The accompanying music video gained attention for its visual concept. This was followed by his mixtape, “Sunday Roast,” in 2016. In 2018, he released “Deli Daydreams,” a concept album detailing the life of a deli worker, which earned him a nomination for the Choice Music Prize. His debut album, “Town’s Dead,” released in 2021, explored themes of grief, gentrification, and the Irish housing crisis, and was a best-selling album on vinyl in Ireland for a period, also receiving a Choice Music Prize nomination.

His career progression also includes the formation of his independent label, Soft Boy Records. Kojaque has consistently integrated his skills as a visual artist and filmmaker into his musical projects, creating a multimedia experience. In 2023, he released his album “Phantom of the Afters,” featuring collaborations with artists such as Biig Piig, Wiki, Charlotte Dos Santos, and Gotts Street Park. This album delve into themes of childhood trauma, depression, grief, and immigrant identity, earning him his third Choice Music Prize nomination. Kojaque’s work showcases a blend of sampling, jazz beats, and socially conscious lyrics.
