Born on July 16, 1996, in Freemans Reach, New South Wales, Australia, Luke Hemmings began his musical journey at an early age. His older brothers taught him to play guitar when he was 10, leading him to take professional lessons and learn from online tutorials. He later started busking. Hemmings attended Norwest Christian College, where he met future bandmates Calum Hood and Michael Clifford. He initially knew them as “frenemies” but later became friends due to shared musical interests. The core of 5 Seconds of Summer was formed when Hemmings began posting YouTube song cover videos under the username “hemmo1996” in 2011. He invited Hood and Clifford to join him, and eventually Ashton Irwin completed the lineup. The band’s first official performance was in December 2011. Their consistent online presence led to interest from major music labels, culminating in a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
Since then, Hemmings has achieved significant success with 5 Seconds of Summer, releasing five studio albums: *5 Seconds of Summer* (2014), *Sounds Good Feels Good* (2015), *Youngblood* (2018), *Calm* (2020), and *5SOS5* (2022). The band has sold over 10 million albums and more than two million concert tickets worldwide, with their songs accumulating over 7 billion streams. Hemmings also ventured into modeling, signing with Wilhelmina Models, and notably walked the runway for Philipp Plein’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2019. In July 2019, he was featured in Numéro Homme’s video editorial, and in December 2019, he was the cover model for Glass Man magazine’s Winter 2019 issue.
Hemming’s solo career began in 2021 with his debut studio album, *When Facing the Things We Turn Away From*, released on August 13, 2021, through Sony Music Australia. The album debuted at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart and charted within the top 20 in Belgium and the United Kingdom. He released his second solo project, the EP *Boy*, on April 26, 2024, and commenced his “Nostalgia For A Time That Never Existed Tour” in May 2024 to support the EP. Hemmings married Sierra Deaton in 2023, and they welcomed their daughter in August 2025.
