About

Martina Mariea Schiff, born on July 29, 1966, in Sharon, Kansas, began her musical journey at a young age, performing with her father’s band, “The Schiffters.” Her early exposure to country music fueled a passion for singing, leading her to perform with a local rock band, The Penetrators, in Wichita. In 1988, she married sound engineer John McBride and subsequently moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1989 to pursue a career in country music. Her husband’s connections, particularly as Garth Brooks’ concert production manager, opened doors; Brooks offered her an opening act slot if she secured a recording contract. In 1991, with the help of a demo tape produced by her husband, McBride signed with RCA Nashville Records.

McBride’s debut album, “The Time Has Come,” released in 1992, showcased her as a neo-traditionalist country singer. Her second album, “The Way That I Am” (1993), brought her commercial success with Top 10 hits like “My Baby Loves Me” and the impactful “Independence Day.” The latter, despite initial radio programmer objections due to its sensitive subject matter, became her signature song, earning Video of the Year and Song of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 1994 and 1995, respectively. This period marked a turning point, establishing her ability to blend strong vocal performances with socially conscious themes.

Throughout her career, McBride has released fourteen studio albums, two greatest hits compilations, and a live album, with eight studio albums and two compilations achieving RIAA Gold certification or higher. She has sold over 14 million albums in the U.S. Her crossover appeal grew with albums like “Evolution” (1997) and “Emotion” (1999), which produced several country and adult contemporary chart-toppers. She has been recognized with the Country Music Association Award for Female Vocalist of the Year four times (1999, 2002, 2003, 2004) and the Academy of Country Music’s “Top Female Vocalist” award three times (2001, 2002, 2003). Beyond music, McBride engages in significant charity work, notably with the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the YWCA, and launched the “Vocal Point” podcast in 2019, further solidifying her influence as an artist and advocate.
