Myanmar Nay Win is a prominent figure in Myanmar's hip hop landscape, celebrated for his versatile talents as a rapper, singer, and songwriter. He has transitioned from a founding member of underground hip hop bands to a commercially successful solo artist and entrepreneur.
Nay Win founded 'Oh My Godfather' (OMG), a fashion design and retail outlet, where he contributes to designing new clothing lines. He jokingly refers to himself as the 'Godfather of Myanmar Hip Hop' because of this brand.
Nay Win started working with Frenzo Production, a major music production company in Myanmar owned by Sai Sai Kham Leng, around 2010. This partnership facilitated his performances in many concerts across Myanmar and at Sai Sai Kham Leng's annual birthday show.
Nay Win collaborated with Pencell Studio for the animated music video of the song "Nga Yee Zar Ka Po Mite Tal," which was part of Sai Sai Kham Leng's album "Sai Sai is Sai Sai." The music video gained significant popularity, achieving millions of views shortly after its release.
Nay Win was born on April 25, 1987, in Kyauk Myaung, Yangon, Myanmar. He began his musical journey in 2000, co-founding the underground hip hop band Snare with his school friend Sithu Phay Myint. The group recorded its first unofficial album in 2001, producing 40 copies on a limited budget. As the hip hop genre gained traction in Yangon, Nay Win and Snare were early contributors to the burgeoning scene, following groups like Acid. In 2003, he became a founding member of the hip hop group G Family, releasing numerous songs and mix-tapes. The following year, 2004, saw him establish Hip Hop Vibration, another hip hop group, which debuted an album titled “Hip Hop Vibration Pya Htan Chat” in 2005.
In 2006, Snare regrouped, recording new songs at Sithu’s home studio. Despite changes in its lineup, with Sithu and Phaing Soe moving on by 2008, Nay Win and Phyo Lay continued as the core members. A significant turning point occurred in 2010 when Nay Win began collaborating with Frenzo Production, a major music production company owned by Sai Sai Kham Leng. This partnership led to increased visibility, with Nay Win performing at concerts across Myanmar, including Sai Sai Kham Leng’s annual birthday show. The late 2010s marked a period of nationwide recognition for Snare, with their first album “Rap Game” released in 2010, followed by “Ba Gyi Phyo and U Nay Win” in 2013. The song “Danger” from these releases achieved widespread popularity, becoming a significant hit in his career. Snare’s success culminated in the “Snare Show 2014” solo performance in Yangon and winning “Best Rap Music Award” and “Best Rap music, song and best album of the year” at the 2014 Myanmar Music Award (MMA). He also toured internationally, performing in Singapore in 2014 and 2015, and in Australia and the USA in 2015. The third Snare album, “Puu Twal Champion,” was released on February 12, 2018, achieving commercial success and topping local album charts.
Nay Win’s influence extended beyond Snare, as he penned lyrics for other artists such as Sai Sai Kham Leng, Kyar Pauk, Saw Nyi Nyi, Bunny Phyoe, G Fatt, Eint Chit, and Amera Hpone. In late 2018, he launched his debut solo album, “Swe Myo Par Mae,” on December 1, 2018. The album was well-received, becoming a best-seller and showcasing his personal style and addressing youth-related themes. A notable collaboration in 2019 included an animated music video for “Nga Yee Zar Ka Po Mite Tal” with other Frenzo artists, which garnered millions of views within days. Beyond music, Nay Win established ‘Oh My Godfather’ (OMG), a fashion design and retail outlet in 2013, where he actively participates in designing clothing lines. He has been in a relationship with travel blogger Travel Kueen since 2009.
