NCT Dream, a sub-unit of the broader NCT group under SM Entertainment, debuted on August 25, 2016, with the single “Chewing Gum.” Initially, the group operated with an admission-and-graduation system, where members would depart after reaching the age of majority. The original lineup included Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung, with an average age of 15.6 years. Mark, already active in other NCT units like NCT U and NCT 127, was also the leader of NCT Dream. Prior to their debut, several members, including Jeno, Jisung, and Chenle, had established careers in commercials, acting, and child singing, respectively, indicating their early engagement in the entertainment industry.
The group’s early years saw the release of their first single album, “The First,” in February 2017, achieving a number one spot on the Gaon Album Chart and earning their first music show win on “The Show.” They were also appointed official ambassadors for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, releasing the official tournament song, “Trigger the Fever.” NCT Dream continued to release EPs like “We Young” (2017) and “We Go Up” (2018), with the latter being Mark’s final release before his initial graduation from the unit at the end of 2018. Their growing international recognition was marked by appearances on Billboard’s “21 Under 21” list and Time’s “25 Most Influential Teens.”
A significant turning point occurred in 2020 when SM Entertainment abolished the graduation system, allowing Mark to rejoin and NCT Dream to continue as a fixed seven-member group. This reorganization led to considerable commercial success with their 2021 studio album, “Hot Sauce,” which surpassed 1.71 million pre-orders and became a “double million seller.” The combined sales of “Hot Sauce” and its repackage, “Hello Future,” further solidified their status as a “triple million seller.” Subsequent releases like “Glitch Mode” (2022) and “ISTJ” (2023) continued their success, with “Glitch Mode” breaking personal sales records and becoming their first entry on the US Billboard 200. Their Japanese debut in 2023 with “Best Friend Ever” also topped the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, demonstrating their expanding global presence.
