Nathan John Feuerstein, known professionally as NF, was born on March 30, 1991, in Gladwin, Michigan. His early life was marked by his parents’ divorce and his mother’s struggle with opioid addiction, which ultimately led to her death in 2009. These formative experiences, along with personal battles with depression, anxiety, and later, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), have profoundly influenced his music. He began his artistic journey by recording songs on a karaoke machine, using one microphone for instrumentals and another for his rhymes. After graduating from Gladwin High School in 2009, he continued to pursue music while working as an electrician, uploading self-produced tracks to YouTube.
NF’s career officially began with the independent release of his debut studio album, “Moments,” in 2010. In 2012, he released his debut extended play, “I’m Free,” featuring production work by Tommee Profitt. A significant turning point came in 2014 when he signed with Capitol Christian Music Group. This partnership led to the release of his self-titled EP, “NF,” which charted successfully on Billboard’s Christian Albums (No. 12), Top Gospel Albums (No. 4), and Top Rap Albums (No. 15). His major-label studio album, “Mansion,” followed in 2015, with its lead single “Intro” being featured in “Madden NFL 16.” Throughout his career, NF’s music has been licensed for use on major television networks and video games, including ESPN, VH1, Showtime, NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” and “MLB The Show 18.”
NF achieved widespread mainstream recognition with his third studio album, “Perception,” released in 2017, which debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum. The album’s single, “Let You Down,” became a top-five hit internationally and reached No. 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He continued this success with subsequent albums, “The Search” (2019) and “Hope” (2023), both of which performed strongly commercially, with “Hope” peaking at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200. NF has embarked on several successful tours, including the Perception World Tour and the Hope Tour, underscoring his dedicated fanbase and consistent appeal in the hip-hop landscape.
