Nicole Zefanya, known professionally as Niki, was born on January 24, 1999, in Jakarta, Indonesia. She developed an early interest in music, teaching herself to play guitar and write songs from the age of nine. Her musical influences included ’90s R&B and hip-hop, alongside gospel music sung by her mother. At 15, Niki achieved an early career milestone by winning a contest to perform as the opening act for Taylor Swift’s The Red Tour in Jakarta (2014). During her teenage years, she maintained a YouTube channel where she shared original acoustic songs and covers, filmed from her bedroom.
In 2017, Niki relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue music studies at Lipscomb University. During this period, she embarked on her professional recording career, releasing her initial singles, “I Like U” and “See U Never,” under the moniker Niki through the American record label 88rising. Her career progressed with her appearance on the 88rising collaborative album *Head in the Clouds* in 2018, contributing five songs to the project. The release of her single “Lowkey” in 2019 led to her second EP, *wanna take this downtown?* Niki continued to contribute to 88rising’s *Head in the Clouds II* in 2019, followed by a live acoustic EP, *Niki Acoustic Sessions: Head in the Clouds II*.
Niki released her debut full-length studio album, *Moonchild*, on September 10, 2020, which was accompanied by the singles “Switchblade,” “Selene,” and “Lose.” *Moonchild* was recognized by *NME* as one of the best Asian albums of the year. In 2021, she contributed four songs, including the lead single “Every Summertime,” to the soundtrack of Marvel’s *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*. “Every Summertime” later received a Gold certification from the RIAA in 2025 for selling over 500,000 copies, making Niki the first Indonesian woman to achieve this honor in the U.S. Her sophomore album, *Nicole*, released in August 2022, entered the album charts in the US and UK. She further extended her global presence with the Nicole World Tour (2022–2023) and the Buzz World Tour (2024–2025), which included arena performances in multiple countries. As of June 2025, Niki is the most-streamed Indonesian artist on Spotify, with over five billion streams.
