Ocean Alley began in 2011, formed by six friends in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The band comprises Baden Donegal (vocals, guitar), Angus Goodwin (lead guitar), Nic Blom (bass), Lach Galbraith (keyboard, vocals), Mitch Galbraith (guitar), and Tom O’Brien (drums). Their early influences included artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Oasis, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, and Dire Straits, which shaped their distinct blend of cruisey psych, rock, and reggae fusion. The band independently released their debut EP, “Yellow Mellow,” in September 2013, followed by “In Purple” in August 2015. These early releases helped them build a regional following through consistent performances at Sydney venues and subsequent interstate tours across Australia.
Their debut studio album, “Lost Tropics,” was released independently on May 16, 2016. This was followed by their first major international tour, encompassing 40 shows across Europe, including sold-out performances in the Netherlands and Germany, as well as dates in the UK, France, Italy, and Switzerland. The band’s second album, “Chiaroscuro,” released on March 9, 2018, debuted at No. 15 on the ARIA Albums Chart. A significant milestone from this period was their track “Confidence,” released in February 2018, which topped the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2018. This achievement significantly expanded their audience and critical recognition. The band continued to release studio albums, including “Lonely Diamond” in 2020 which peaked at number 3 on the ARIA Chart, and “Low Altitude Living” in 2022.
In 2023, “Confidence” experienced a resurgence on TikTok, introducing the band to a new global audience and leading to its return to the ARIA Singles Chart Top 40 and entry into the U.K.’s Independent Single Breakers Chart. The band’s fifth studio album, “Love Balloon,” is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025. This album explores themes of love and features production by Nick DiDia. In 2024, their single “Tangerine” placed at number 15 in the Triple J Hottest 100. Ocean Alley has also engaged in various tours, headlining their largest North American run in 2025 and announcing an Australia and New Zealand tour for 2026, alongside appearances at major festivals like Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza.
