About

Karl Martin Sandberg, known professionally as Max Martin, was born on February 26, 1971, in Stockholm, Sweden. Growing up in Stenhamra, he developed an early passion for music, dropping out of high school to pursue a career with his glam-style metal band, It’s Alive, in 1985. Under the nickname “Martin White,” he served as the band’s singer and frontman. The band gained traction, signing a record deal with producer Denniz Pop’s Cheiron Records after making a demo record for Megarock Records. Their second album, “Earthquake Visions,” released in 1994, sold 30,000 copies across 30 countries. During this period, Martin began collaborating with Denniz Pop, who recognized his talent for writing pop songs and became his mentor, renaming him Max Martin.

Martin joined Cheiron Studios in 1993, dedicating two years to learning the fundamentals of production. His initial production collaboration with Denniz Pop was the Rednex song “Wish You Were Here” in 1994. The name “Max Martin” was officially coined when E-Type and Pop credited him on E-Type’s song “This Is the Way.” He contributed to Ace of Base’s album “The Bridge” (1995), which sold over six million copies globally. In 1995, Cheiron Studios partnered with Zomba, leading Martin to co-write and co-produce hits for the Backstreet Boys, including “Quit Playing Games (with My Heart)” (1996), “As Long As You Love Me” (1997), and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” (1997). These tracks propelled the Backstreet Boys to international success, with their debut album selling around 8 million copies worldwide. Martin also co-wrote and co-produced Robyn’s top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes).”

Following Denniz Pop’s death in 1998, Martin assumed leadership of Cheiron Studios. He began a long-standing partnership with Rami Yacoub and continued to produce major hits. In 1998, he broke through with Britney Spears’ debut single “…Baby One More Time,” a global phenomenon that sold over 30 million copies and established her as a pop icon. Martin also worked on Spears’ subsequent albums, “Oops!… I Did It Again” (2000) and “Britney” (2001), co-writing and co-producing chart-topping singles like “Oops!… I Did It Again” and “Lucky.” In 2001, he co-founded Maratone, a new production company, and continued his remarkable career, producing hits for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, P!nk, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Coldplay. He has written or co-written 28 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, becoming the second-most successful songwriter on the chart. His work has earned him 11 ASCAP Songwriter of the Year awards and 5 Grammy Awards.
