Born Robert Anthony Commagere on September 25, 1987, in Los Angeles, California, Robert Francis was raised in a musical household. His father was a pianist and producer, and his sister, Juliette Commagere, was also a songwriter. Family friend and acclaimed string musician Ry Cooder gifted Francis his first guitar at the age of nine. At 16, he became the only guitar student of John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a foundational experience that shaped his musical development.
Francis released his debut album, “One by One,” in 2007 at the age of 19. The album, recorded over a year primarily in his childhood home, garnered critical attention for its depth and musicality, leading to a major-label contract with Atlantic Records. His career progressed with “Before Nightfall” in 2009, which featured the hit song “Junebug.” This track achieved significant airplay in Europe, reaching top positions in France, Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal. He performed “Junebug” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 2010 and at the 25th Annual Farm Aid festival.
In 2012, Francis released “Strangers in the First Place” through Vanguard Records, recorded in a Malibu architectural landmark. His work continued with “Heaven” in 2014, issued under Aeronaut Records, followed by “Fire Engine Red” in 2016 and “Indian Summer” in 2017. His later releases include “Amaretto” in 2020 and its follow-up, “The End Times, Vol. 1,” released two months later in the same year, showcasing his prolific songwriting and continued exploration of roots and rock music.
