Peter Cat Recording Co. is an Indian alternative rock band that formed in Delhi in 2009. The band’s current lineup includes Suryakant Sawhney (vocals, guitar), Karan Singh (drums), Dhruv Bhola (bass, samples), Rohit Gupta (keyboards, trumpet), and Kartik Sundareshan Pillai (keyboards, guitar, electronics, trumpet). The band’s early years were marked by a spiritual experience by Sawhney in 2008, which led him to pursue music seriously. Upon returning to India in 2010, the project became a quintet, releasing their debut album, “Sinema,” on January 1, 2011. This album, a mix of jazz, cabaret, and pop, launched the band into the mainstream, leading to a promotional tour across various Indian cities. They continued to release experimental recordings, such as “Wall of Want” in 2012, and integrated new members and instruments, with Pillai incorporating the trumpet into their sound by 2014.

The band’s career progressed with the release of “Climax” in 2015, followed by self-produced music videos. In 2016, they undertook the “Transmissions” project, where they wrote, recorded, and produced a new song weekly for two months. By 2018, French label Panache contacted them, leading to the release of a compilation album, “Portrait of a Time: 2010-2016.” This period also saw shifts in band members, with Rohan Kulshreshtha departing and Rohit Gupta and Dhruv Bhola joining. In 2019, they released their album “Bismillah,” recorded in Delhi and Paris, which was followed by extensive tours across India, Europe, and Australasia. They partnered with Pagal Haina for management during this time.

Most recently, Peter Cat Recording Co. released their album “BETA बेटा” on August 9, 2024. In anticipation of this release, they debuted the single “People Never Change” in May 2024 and announced the “Good Luck BETA ’24” tour, comprising 77 shows across North America, India, and Europe. This continued global touring reflects their international appeal and dedication to their craft. The band’s consistent output and touring demonstrate a clear progression from their local origins to achieving broader recognition.
