Phil Collins

Philip David Charles Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in London, England. His musical journey began early, receiving a toy drum kit at age five and later practicing by playing along to music on television and radio. Collins also pursued acting in his youth, securing a notable role as the Artful Dodger in a West End production of “Oliver!” While acting provided early experience, his passion for music led him to shift his focus, eventually joining the rock band Genesis in 1970 as their drummer. This period allowed him to develop his musical skills and begin contributing to songwriting within the band.

Following the departure of Peter Gabriel in 1975, Collins stepped into the role of lead singer for Genesis, marking a significant turning point in the band’s history and his own career. Simultaneously, he expanded his musical endeavors by drumming for the jazz rock band Brand X. The 1980s saw the launch of his highly successful solo career, initially driven by personal experiences and his interest in soul music. Albums like “Face Value” (1981) and “No Jacket Required” (1985) spawned numerous hits and showcased his distinctive gated reverb drum sound, making him one of the era’s most prominent pop and adult contemporary artists.

Collins continued to achieve milestones, including performing at both Live Aid concerts in 1985 and winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Disney’s “Tarzan” (1999). He rejoined Genesis for reunion tours in 2007 and 2020-2022, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the band alongside his solo work. Collins’s career achievements include selling over 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the few artists to sell over 100 million records both as a solo artist and as a principal band member. He has been recognized with multiple Grammy Awards, Brit Awards, Golden Globe Awards, an Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award, solidifying his status as an influential figure in music.
