The group consists of members John Baldwin Gourley, Zach Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, Jason Sechrist, Eric Howk, and Zoe Manville. The band’s unique name, Portugal. The Man, was inspired by the tagline “A man needs a country” from The Catcher in the Rye. The band initially gained fame in their hometown of Wasilla, performing at local venues and crafting their distinct sound.
In 2006, they released their debut album, Waiter: “You Vultures!”, followed by Church Mouth in 2007, which showcased a blend of psychedelic rock, funk, and indie genres. Portugal. The Man’s breakthrough album, In the Mountain in the Cloud, was released in 2011, which provided the band with mainstream success. The album featured hit singles “So American” and “People Say”.
