Christopher Aubrey Shiflett was born on May 6, 1971, in Santa Barbara, California. His music career began in a band called Lost Kittenz and later progressed to the San Francisco Bay Area punk rock band No Use for a Name, which he joined in the mid-1990s. During this period, he also became a member of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. In 1999, Shiflett joined the Foo Fighters as their lead guitarist. This move followed the release of the band’s third album, “There Is Nothing Left to Lose,” and came after an audition process. His addition to Foo Fighters marked a significant turning point in his career.
Since joining Foo Fighters, Shiflett has been an integral part of the band’s success, contributing to albums starting with “One by One” in 2002. He has toured extensively and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Foo Fighters in 2021. Beyond his work with Foo Fighters, Shiflett has maintained several side projects, including Jackson United and Viva Death, the latter with his brother, Scott. He also formed Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants, releasing country-oriented albums, and has released solo albums such as “West Coast Town” (2017), “Hard Lessons” (2019), and “Lost at Sea” (2023). His diverse musical background spans punk rock, alternative rock, country, and hard rock.
Shiflett has hosted a weekly podcast, “Walking the Floor with Chris Shiflett,” from 2013 to 2022, featuring interviews with various musicians. In June 2023, he launched a new guitar-focused podcast, “Shred with Shifty.” He is also known for his extensive guitar collection and use of Fender Telecasters, with Fender creating a signature Chris Shiflett Telecaster Deluxe. His career showcases a blend of collaborative rock supergroup success and individual artistic exploration in multiple genres, demonstrating his versatility and consistent presence in the music industry.
