Red Velvet, formed and managed by SM Entertainment, debuted on August 1, 2014, with the four-member lineup of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. Their initial single, “Happiness,” released digitally on August 4, 2014, rapidly gained over two million views on YouTube within 24 hours, marking them as the first K-pop girl group to chart a debut single on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart at number four. In March 2015, Yeri joined the group, completing the five-member formation. The release of their first extended play, “Ice Cream Cake,” on March 17, 2015, propelled them to commercial success and earned them their first music show trophy on KBS’ Music Bank. The EP notably became the best-selling album by a girl group in South Korea in the first half of 2015.
Throughout their career, Red Velvet has consistently demonstrated musical versatility, exploring vibrant electropop on their “red” side and sophisticated R&B on their “velvet” side. This dual concept has defined their artistry and public image, setting them apart in the K-pop industry. Notable releases include their first studio album, “The Red” (2015), which topped the Billboard World Albums Chart, and the successful comeback with “Russian Roulette” (2016). In 2017, they achieved “top girl group” status with chart-topping EPs like “Rookie,” “The Red Summer,” and “Perfect Velvet,” with “Red Flavor” reaching number one on the Gaon Digital Chart. Their 2018 reissue, “The Perfect Red Velvet,” with lead single “Bad Boy,” marked their first appearance on the Canadian Hot 100.
The group’s international reach expanded with their North American leg of the Redmare Tour in 2019, making them the first K-pop girl group in three years to undertake such a tour. They collaborated with Ellie Goulding and Diplo on a remix of “Close to Me,” which won at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards. The “ReVe Festival” trilogy (2019) saw continuous chart success, with “Psycho” achieving platinum certification for over 100 million streams. Even during a hiatus due to Wendy’s injury, the group was featured in the animated film “Trolls World Tour” (2020), further cementing their global recognition. After Wendy’s return and their 2021 EP “Queendom,” which debuted at number 16 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart, Red Velvet continued their dominance with the ‘The ReVe Festival 2022’ series and their first Japanese studio album, “Bloom” (2022).
