Red Velvet, a South Korean girl group, has evolved into a global phenomenon known for their unique dual concept, captivating audiences with both vibrant pop and sophisticated R&B. After their official performance debut on Music Bank on August 1, 2014, Red Velvet launched their digital debut single, ‘Happiness,’ on August 4, 2014. It garnered over two million YouTube views within 24 hours and made them the first K-pop girl group to chart a debut single on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart at number four. Following Yeris addition in March 2015, the now five-member group released their first extended play, ‘Ice Cream Cake’ (March 17, 2015).
In 2017, they achieved ‘top girl group’ status with chart-topping EPs, including ‘Red Flavor’ which hit number one on the Gaon Digital Chart. Their 2018 reissue, ‘The Perfect Red Velvet,’ featuring ‘Bad Boy,’ marked their first appearance on the Canadian Hot 100. In 2019, Red Velvet launched the North American leg of their Redmare Tour, the first for a K-pop girl group in three years. Their collaboration with Ellie Goulding and Diplo on a remix of ‘Close to Me’ won a 2019 Teen Choice Award.
They also released their first Japanese studio album, ‘Bloom’ (April), and EPs including ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 Birthday’ (November), alongside the collaborative single ‘Beautiful Christmas’ with Aespa. Their fourth concert tour, R to V, began in Seoul in April 2023. November 2023 saw the release of their third studio album, ‘Chill Kill,’ followed by a performance for the New Year’s Countdown in Taguig, Philippines. For 2024, the group announced their comeback EP, ‘Cosmic’ (June 10), and their tenth-anniversary fancon tour, Happiness: My Dear, ReVe1uv, starting August 3, with additional performances due to sold-out demand.
