About

Brian Imanuel Soewarno, known professionally as Rich Brian, was born on September 3, 1999, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He grew up in West Jakarta, receiving a homeschooling education and assisting at his parents’ cafe. His early engagement with the internet, beginning at age 11 with YouTube and Twitter, led him to create dark comedy sketches. At 15, he transitioned to Vine, where he daily posted videos. During this period, he learned English by watching YouTube videos and interacting with an American friend via Skype. His introduction to hip-hop began in 2012, influenced by artists such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Drake, 2 Chainz, Kanye West, and Logic. Brian wrote his first rap song in 2014, recording it on an iPhone.

Brian launched his music career in 2015 under the name Rich Chigga, releasing “Living the Dream.” His debut single, “Dat $tick,” released on March 11, 2016, gained international attention after a reaction video featuring prominent rappers was released by 88rising, leading to his signing with the label. “Dat $tick” was later certified gold by the RIAA and peaked at number four on the Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. He released his second single, “Who That Be,” in August 2016, followed by “Seventeen,” which quickly amassed over a million views. Brian embarked on his first U.S. tour in April 2017 and released “Gospel” in collaboration with XXXTentacion and Keith Ape.

In 2017, Brian earned the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award at the 4th Indonesian Choice Awards. He released several singles, including “Glow Like Dat,” “Chaos,” and “Crisis,” featuring 21 Savage. In January 2018, he officially changed his stage name to Rich Brian, acknowledging past controversy. His debut studio album, “Amen,” released on February 2, 2018, made him the first Asian musician to reach number one on the iTunes Hip Hop charts and peaked at number 18 on the U.S. Billboard 200. He continued to release music, including his second studio album “The Sailor” in 2019, the EP “1999” in 2020, and “Brightside” in 2022. Rich Brian also made his film debut in Justin Chon’s “Jamojaya” in 2023 and contributed significantly to the soundtrack of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” with his track “Run It” becoming ESPN’s anthem for college football coverage.
