Robin Taylor Zander

Robin Wayne Zander was born on January 23, 1953, in Beloit, Wisconsin, and was raised in Loves Park, Illinois. He began playing the guitar at the age of 12. Prior to his significant career with Cheap Trick, Zander was part of the folk duo Zander & Kent in the early 1970s, alongside Brian Beebe. His early musical development laid the foundation for his later contributions to rock music.

In 1974, Robin Zander accepted an invitation to join Cheap Trick, where he became the lead singer and rhythm guitarist. The band, consisting of Rick Nielsen on guitar, Tom Petersson on bass, and Bun E. Carlos on drums, gained widespread recognition with their 1979 album, “Cheap Trick at Budokan.” This album propelled the band to international stardom and contributed to their lasting impact on the music industry. Cheap Trick achieved Top 10 status in the U.S. charts in 1979 with “I Want You to Want Me” and topped the charts in 1988 with “The Flame.” The band has performed over 5,000 shows and sold more than 20 million albums.

Zander was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Cheap Trick in 2016, acknowledging his substantial contributions to rock music. He has also pursued a solo career, releasing his self-titled album “Robin Zander” in 1993, and “Countryside Blvd” in 2011. His powerful tenor voice has been described as “jaw-dropping” and “supremely virtuosic,” influencing numerous rock singers across different genres, from 1980s hard rock to 1990s alternative and punk revival. Notably, his solo work includes hit singles such as “In This Country” (1987), a duet with Rebbie Jackson titled “You Send the Rain Away” (1987), and “Surrender to Me” with Ann Wilson (1988).
