Single Mothers is a Canadian punk rock band that formed in London, Ontario in 2008. Andrew Thomson founded the band after a breakup, focusing on raw, energetic punk rock. In its early years, the band released two EPs: “Wild Party” in 2010 and a self-titled EP “Single Mothers” in 2011. The self-titled EP was released through Secret Voice, an imprint of Jacob Bannon’s Deathwish Inc. These early releases featured music videos for tracks such as “Christian Girls” and “Baby,” contributing to the band’s initial promotion.
Following these releases, Thomson temporarily left the band in 2011 to prospect for gold in Swastika, Ontario, a decision influenced by his father. During this period, Thomson also began working on solo material, releasing the four-song EP “Honesty is a Confidence Problem” in 2013 through Secret Voice, and a two-song self-titled EP under his own name, Drew Thomson, in 2014 via No Sleep Records. Thomson resumed his work with Single Mothers in 2013 and has continued his solo career and gold prospecting activities in parallel.
The band, with Thomson back, began working on their debut studio album. They collaborated with producer Joby J. Ford of The Bronx. Recording sessions took place in multiple locations including Los Angeles, Toronto, London, and New York. This album, “Negative Qualities,” was released on October 7, 2014, through Hot Charity, with Canadian licensing handled by Dine Alone Records. In 2017, Single Mothers released their second full-length album, “Our Pleasure,” followed by “Through A Wall” in 2018, “Everything You Need” in 2022, and “Roy” in 2023, all released through Dine Alone Records.
