He is a founding member and the lead singer of the rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, a group he has been active with since 1998. Beyond his contributions to NEEDTOBREATHE, Rinehart extended his musical career with a solo project in 2019, adopting the stage name Wilder Woods. The name Wilder Woods is derived from his two eldest sons, Wilder and Woods, highlighting a personal connection to this creative endeavor.
Rinehart’s career is marked by consistent musical output and critical recognition. With NEEDTOBREATHE, he has released multiple studio albums, including “Daylight” (2006), “The Heat” (2007), “The Outsiders” (2009), “The Reckoning” (2011), “Rivers in the Wasteland” (2014), “Hard Love” (2016), “Out of Body” (2020), “Into the Mystery” (2021), and “Caves” (2023). A significant milestone in his career with the band was a Grammy Award nomination in 2015. His solo career as Wilder Woods commenced with the release of singles “Someday Soon” and “Sure Ain’t” in April 2019, followed by his self-titled debut solo album in August 2019 under Atlantic Records. This album achieved commercial success, debuting at No. 20 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart and No. 2 on Top Heatseekers. The album’s single, “Supply & Demand,” reached No. 19 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. He continued his solo work with “FEVER / SKY” in March 2023 via Dualtone Records, dedicating it to his third son, Waters.
In addition to his band and solo projects, Rinehart has engaged in various collaborations, demonstrating his broad artistic interests. He has been a featured artist on tracks with other musicians, including American Authors, Mercyme, and John Mark McMillan. He also independently released “sink our love now (work tape)” in February 2021 under his Wilder Woods moniker, followed by “man made weather” and “heavenly light.” These independent releases were compiled into “the work tapes ep” in April 2021, recorded in his home studio in Franklin, Tennessee.
