About

Skinny Puppy was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1982 by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) as an experimental side project. Dissatisfied with the pop-oriented direction of his previous band, Images in Vogue, Key aimed to create something more compelling and experimental. The group evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie). The duo, along with Images in Vogue engineer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie, released their first EP, “Back & Forth,” in 1983. This release attracted the attention of Vancouver-based Nettwerk, leading to a record deal. Their early work, including the EP “Remission” (1984) and debut album “Bites” (1985), established their unique sound, characterized by layered electronics, samples, and distorted vocals. Their live shows became known for their theatrical and horror-themed elements, often addressing social and political issues.

In 1986, Dwayne Goettel joined the band, bringing a new level of technical proficiency and shaping Skinny Puppy’s evolving electro-industrial sound. This period saw the release of influential albums such as “Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse” (1986), “Cleanse Fold and Manipulate” (1987), and “VIVIsectVI” (1988). “VIVIsectVI” notably focused on animal rights, a prominent theme in their work, and featured the single “Testure,” which gained traction on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1989. The band gained a dedicated cult following and was influential in shaping the industrial music landscape. Their 1990 album, “Too Dark Park,” was regarded as a return to their earlier, more abrasive style, marking a new decade with a focus on environmental degradation themes.

After a period of internal conflict and drug-related issues, culminating in the death of Dwayne Goettel in 1995, the band temporarily disbanded following the release of “The Process” (1996). Key and Ogre reunited in 2000 for a one-off performance at the Doomsday Festival and officially reformed in 2003 with producer Mark Walk. They continued to release albums, including “The Greater Wrong of the Right” (2004), “Mythmaker” (2007), “HanDover” (2011), and “Weapon” (2013), the latter inspired by allegations of their music being used for torture. Skinny Puppy embarked on their “Final Tour” in 2023, marking their 40th anniversary and concluding their significant career.
