Soen formed in 2010, originating from the Swedish progressive metal scene. The band was co-founded by drummer Martin Lopez, noted for his previous work with Opeth, and vocalist Joel Ekelöf from Willowtree. Their debut album, “Cognitive,” released in February 2012 by Spinefarm Records, immediately established their sound, characterized by intricate rhythms and melodic structures. The initial lineup also included bassist Steve Di Giorgio and guitarist Joakim Platbarzdis. Early material, such as the song “Fraccions” in October 2010 and the video for “Savia” in February 2012, showcased their technical musicianship and unique artistic direction.
Following their debut, Soen continued to develop their sound with subsequent albums. “Tellurian” (2014) and “Lykaia” (2017) further explored their musical approach, with “Lykaia” notably recorded using analog equipment. The band’s lineup evolved over time, with Lars Enok Åhlund joining on keyboards, guitars, and percussion in 2014, and Cody Lee Ford taking over guitar duties in 2018. Stefan Stenberg has also served as bassist across different periods, including from 2013 to 2020 and resuming in 2025. This consistent evolution of personnel contributed to their ongoing artistic development.
Later albums, “Lotus” (2019) and “Imperial” (2021), broadened their critical acclaim and solidified their position in the genre. “Memorial,” their sixth studio album, released in September 2023, received notable recognition, including being named Album of the Year by Metal Hammer Germany. Soen is set to release their seventh album, “Reliance,” in January 2026. The band is recognized for its live performances, which are cited as intense and precise, combining technical skill with emotional delivery.
