Born in Buffalo, New York, Julie Byrne cultivated her musical foundation by learning fingerstyle guitar at age seventeen, influenced by her father’s playing. This period was significant, occurring after her father ceased playing due to multiple sclerosis, allowing her to honor his craft. After leaving Buffalo at eighteen, Byrne resided in various U.S. cities, including Pittsburgh, Northampton, Chicago, Lawrence, Seattle, and New Orleans, experiences that shaped her artistic perspective.
Her discography includes three studio albums: “Rooms with Walls and Windows” (2014), “Not Even Happiness” (2017), and “The Greater Wings” (2023). The 2017 album, “Not Even Happiness,” garnered critical acclaim and marked a significant turning point, transitioning her into a full-time working musician. In addition to her music career, Byrne pursued environmental science and worked as a seasonal ranger in New York City’s Central Park in 2016, viewing it as a sanctuary and a form of public service.
The creation of her third album, “The Greater Wings,” in 2023, was profoundly impacted by the unexpected passing of her close collaborator and partner, Eric Littmann, who was producing the album. This work became a memorial to their shared moments and addressed themes of grief and heartache, showcasing her ability to translate personal experiences into her art.
