Starship achieved multi-platinum success with their September 1985 debut album, Knee Deep in the Hoopla, which soared to the top of the charts with two number-one U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles. Featuring co-lead vocalists Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick, alongside guitarist Craig Chaquico, bassist Pete Sears, and drummer Donny Baldwin, the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Its lead singles, ‘We Built This City’ and ‘Sara,’ both reached the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985.
The track also garnered significant industry recognition, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 1988. Following this period of immense success, Grace Slick departed the band in February 1988, leading to Mickey Thomas becoming the sole lead vocalist. In August 1989, Starship released Love Among the Cannibals, which saw its single ‘It’s Not Enough’ climb to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. This album’s supporting tour marked a period of transition for the band, including an incident that led to drummer Donny Baldwin’s departure and Mickey Thomas requiring facial surgery.
Their most recent studio album, Loveless Fascination, was released on September 17, 2013, followed by a performance at the Streamy Awards on September 8, 2014. Most recently, on February 1, 2019, Rhino Entertainment acquired the rights to the Starship catalog, further cementing the bands enduring legacy and market value.
