Taj Hendrix “Tash” Sultana, born on June 15, 1995, in Melbourne, Australia, began playing guitar at the age of three. Their early career involved busking on the streets of Melbourne and performing at open mic nights up to six times a week across Victoria. From 2008 to 2012, Sultana was the vocalist for the band Mindpilot, which won several Battle of the Bands competitions in Melbourne before disbanding in 2012. Sultana gained significant international attention in 2016 after sharing a video of their single “Jungle” online, which accumulated over one million views within five days and has since exceeded 40 million views. This viral success marked a转 turning point, leading to a record deal and broader recognition.
Following the success of “Jungle,” Sultana released their EP, “Notion,” in September 2016 through their independent record label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP reached number 8 on the ARIA Album Chart. This period also saw Sultana win Triple J’s J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year and have “Jungle” and “Notion” voted into the Triple J Hottest 100. Sultana embarked on a sold-out world tour in early 2017, performing across Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Their father took on the role of their roadie during this tour. In 2017, Sultana released the single “Murder to the Mind,” which reached number 59 on the ARIA Australian Singles Chart, and “Mystik,” which premiered on Triple J. Sultana also made their US late-night television debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” that year, performing “Jungle.” In 2018, Sultana released their debut album, “Flow State,” which peaked at number 2 on the ARIA Albums Charts.
Sultana continued to expand their musical endeavors, releasing singles such as “Can’t Buy Happiness” in 2019 and engaging in collaborations like “Talk It Out” with Matt Corby and “Daydreaming” with Milky Chance. In 2020, Sultana expanded their live performance setup by recruiting session musicians, having previously performed as a “one-person band.” That same year, they released several singles, including “Pretty Lady,” “Greed,” “Beyond The Pine,” and “Willow Tree” featuring Jerome Farah, leading up to the release of their sophomore album, “Terra Firma,” in February 2021. Sultana self-recorded, engineered, performed, arranged, and produced the entire album. In 2022, Sultana announced extensive tours across the UK, Europe, and North America, including a sold-out show at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Recent releases include the EPs “Sugar” (2023) and “Return to the Roots” (scheduled for 2025).
