Bastille formed in 2010, initially as a solo project for lead vocalist Dan Smith. The group expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist and guitarist Will Farquarson, and drummer Chris “Woody” Wood. After independently releasing a debut single “Flaws” and the EP “Laura Palmer” in 2010-2011, the band signed with Virgin Records in December 2011. Their music, blending indie pop, pop rock, and synth-pop, gained early recognition through online platforms and performances at major UK festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds Festival.
Their debut studio album, “Bad Blood,” released in March 2013, achieved significant commercial success by reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album featured the popular single “Pompeii,” which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and was later released in the US. The band continued to build on this success with their second album, “Wild World,” released in September 2016, which also reached number one in the UK and Scottish album charts and won “Best Album” at the 2017 NME Awards. Bastille later released “Doom Days” in June 2019, which reached the top 5 in both the UK and US, and their fourth studio album, “Give Me the Future,” in February 2022, securing their third UK number one album. The band has sold over eleven million records worldwide and received numerous awards and nominations, including a Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act in 2014.
Throughout their career, Bastille has also engaged in various notable collaborations and projects. In 2014, they were nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. They released several mixtapes, including “VS. (Other People’s Heartache, Pt. III)” in 2014, and collaborated with artists like Marshmello on the 2018 single “Happier.” Their music has been broadly featured across television shows, films, video games, and advertisements, showcasing their versatility and appeal. Most recently, in October 2024, they released their fifth studio album, “&,” a concept album based on personal stories.
