Tate Rosner McRae was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her mother, Tanja Rosner, is a dance instructor, and her father, Todd McRae, is a vice president at Pacific Energy. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Oman for three years due to her father’s work. She began recreational dance training at age six and intensified her training upon returning to Calgary at age eight. In 2013, McRae was awarded Mini Best Female Dancer at The Dance Awards in New York City. She voiced Spot Splatter Splash for the “Lalaloopsy” franchise from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, she received a two-week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet after winning silver and bronze medals at the Youth America Grand Prix. She earned the Best Female Dancer award in the Junior category at the 2015 Dance Awards and was featured in a pas de deux in the Alberta Ballet Company’s production “Our Canada” in 2017.
In June 2016, McRae performed at Justin Bieber’s concert in Calgary during his Purpose World Tour. She appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in April and October 2016 as part of dance troupes. In June 2016, at age 12, she became the first Canadian finalist on the American reality TV show “So You Think You Can Dance,” placing third nationally. She performed for Demi Lovato in 2017 and won her third Best Female Dancer award in the Teen category at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, becoming the first dancer to win in all categories from mini to teen. In 2018, she choreographed and danced in the music video for Nothing More’s song “Just Say When.”
McRae started a YouTube series in 2017, releasing original songs composed in her bedroom. Her song “One Day” gained over 40 million views, leading to its self-release as her debut independent single and eventual gold certification in Canada. This exposure led to her signing with RCA Records in August 2019. In 2020, her song “You Broke Me First” became an international hit, charting in multiple countries and becoming her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Forbes recognized her as the youngest musician on their 30 Under 30 list in 2020. Her second EP, “Too Young to Be Sad” (2021), became the most streamed female EP on Spotify that year.
