About

Carlos Alberto Sánchez, known professionally as Charlie Zaa, was born on January 30, 1974, in Girardot, Colombia. His musical career began at an early age, influenced by his father, vocalist Carlos Alberto Sanchez. Zaa started by imitating his father’s singing of standards and, at the age of 12, filled in for his ailing father at a performance. He gained initial experience singing for Colombian salsa orchestras, including Grupo Niche and Guayacán, before establishing himself as a solo artist. This early exposure to various musical styles laid the groundwork for his diverse repertoire.

Zaa transitioned to a solo career in the mid-1990s, signing with Sony. In 1996, he released his debut album, “Sentimientos,” which focused on bolero interpretations of classics by artists such as Olimpo Cárdenas and Julio Jaramillo. This album sold over three million copies across Latin America and the United States, launching his international career. Following this success, he released “Segundo Sentimiento” in 1998 and “Ciego de Amor” in 2000, the latter selling over half a million copies in Mexico and exceeding one million globally. His album “De un Solo Sentimiento” (2001) earned a Latin Grammy nomination in 2002 and topped the charts, further cementing his reputation in the Latin music scene.

Over the years, Charlie Zaa has demonstrated career progression through his exploration of different musical styles while maintaining his connection to traditional Latin genres. After focusing on boleros, he incorporated pop tropical styles in “Grandes Sentimientos” (2002) and released his first all-bachata album, “Bachata con Puro Sentimiento,” in 2005. Following a period of personal challenges, Zaa made a comeback with “De Bohemia” in 2010, an album dedicated to Orlando Contreras, which reached the top spot on the Latin albums chart and remained on the charts for 62 weeks. In 2015, he released “Mi Mejor Regalo,” a tribute album to Joan Sebastian, which also topped the tropical albums chart. His 2017 album, “Celebracion,” featured new live renditions of songs from his debut. Throughout his career, Zaa has performed for sold-out crowds across Latin America and the United States.
