Few indie rock bands have watched a five-year-old song suddenly take over the internet, but that is exactly what happened to The Rare Occasions when “Notion” went viral on TikTok in October 2021. Formed in Somerville, Massachusetts in 2012, the American band built their reputation the slow way: steady releases, relentless writing, and a knack for melodies that refuse to let go. Written by lead singer Brian McLaughlin, “Notion” first appeared independently on the Futureproof EP, released August 5, 2016 — their fourth EP, following their 2012 debut, the Demo Recordings EP. Five years after its release, a slowed version of the track spread across TikTok and YouTube in videos about nostalgia and subscriber milestones, and the band re-released it as a single to meet the surge in demand.
Today the group consists of McLaughlin on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Cohen on bass and backing vocals, and Luke Imbusch on drums and backing vocals. Lead guitarist Peter Stone departed in 2018, after which the trio carried the project forward as a tighter unit.
Their most recent album, “Through Moonshot Eyes,” arrived in September 2024, extending a catalog that spans a dozen years of independent releases and a second life in the streaming era.
