Shadowgrass

Shadowgrass is an American progressive bluegrass band that was established in 2014 in the Blue Ridge Mountains region, spanning Virginia and North Carolina. The band was formed by childhood friends Clay Russell (banjo), Luke Morris (mandolin, lead vocals), and Kyser George (guitar) during a jam session at the Grayson County Fiddlers Convention in Elk Creek, Virginia. At the time of their formation, the members were between 9 and 14 years old. The group initially operated under various names before adopting “Shadowgrass.” Their early career included an opening performance for Billy Strings at the Rives Theatre in 2017, marking an early significant milestone.

By 2019, Shadowgrass had gained recognition within the bluegrass community, leading to a feature on the public radio program *American Routes*, which highlighted them as a promising young act in the genre. The band’s lineup expanded to include Madison Morris on fiddle and vocals, and Evan Campfield on upright bass, solidifying their current configuration. This expansion contributed to their evolving sound and performance capabilities. Throughout their progression, individual members have also achieved notable recognition. Guitarist Kyser George received the IBMA Momentum Award – Instrumentalist of the Year in 2025 and secured first place in the North Carolina State Flatpicking Guitar Championship in 2021. The band itself was selected as the official IBMA Youth Council Showcase band in 2016.

Shadowgrass released their self-titled debut album in 2022, followed by their second album, *All That Will*, in 2024. These releases demonstrate their commitment to recording and distributing their music. Their discography also includes several singles, such as “Mr. Charlie” (2022), “Rich Girl” (2022), “Pleasantly Aimless” (2024), and “Uncertain Times” (2024). The band maintains an active touring schedule, performing at festivals and venues across the United States, including Shoe Fest, High Noon Saloon, Garcia’s Chicago, and the Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival.
