TOPS signed with Ghostly International for their first new music since 2022’s self-released Empty Seats EP, marking the start of a new chapter in their career.

TOPS, an indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, was formed in 2011 by childhood friends Jane Penny (vocals, keyboard, flute) and David Carriere (guitar). They were previously members of the synthpop group Silly Kissers. The band solidified its lineup with Riley Fleck on drums, and later Marta Cikojevic joined on keyboard in 2017. Emerging from Montreal’s DIY scene, TOPS quickly became known for their unique blend of indie rock, soft rock, synth-pop, and dream pop.
TOPS released their debut album, “Tender Opposites,” on February 28, 2012, to positive reviews. The album was recognized as the eighth-best album of 2012 by Gorilla vs. Bear. This early success established their reputation for crafting honest and open-hearted songwriting with an unforced yet pristine recording style. Their career progression continued with the release of “Picture You Staring” in 2014, which further cemented their presence in the indie music scene. The band’s discography includes additional studio albums like “Sugar at the Gate” (2017) and “I Feel Alive” (2020), as well as various singles and EPs. In 2025, they are set to release “Bury the Key” under Ghostly International, marking a new chapter in their musical journey. Their music reliably delivers both immediacy and depth, showcasing a band dynamic that has evolved through consistent collaboration and individual growth.
Over the years, TOPS has maintained a steady creative output, with members exploring solo projects while consistently returning to their collective work. Guitarist David Carriere produced keyboardist Marta Cikojevic’s solo debut “Marci,” drummer Riley Fleck contributed to multiple touring bands, and singer Jane Penny released her own solo EP in 2024. These individual endeavors have enriched their collective sound, bringing fresh perspectives and a more “pro mode” approach to their recordings. Their upcoming album, “Bury the Key,” which was over a year in the making, showcases themes of isolation and change, influenced by personal experiences and global uncertainties. The band’s commitment to authentic songwriting and their continuous exploration of new sonic territories underscore their enduring appeal and artistic integrity.
