Christopher Stephen Botti, born on October 12, 1962, in Portland, Oregon, began playing the trumpet at age nine. His early exposure to music came through his mother, a classically trained pianist. A pivotal moment in his commitment to the trumpet occurred at age 12, inspired by Miles Davis’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine.” In 1981, Botti was selected for the McDonald’s All American High School Jazz Band, leading to his first performance at Carnegie Hall. He furthered his musical education at Mount Hood Community College and the Indiana University School of Music, studying under jazz educator David Baker and trumpet professor Bill Adam. During his studies, Botti received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, enabling him to study with trumpeters Woody Shaw and George Coleman.
Botti’s professional career began in the mid-1980s when he left Indiana University to tour briefly with Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich. Moving to New York City in 1985, he established himself as a studio musician. A significant period of his early career involved a decade-long touring and recording relationship with Paul Simon, beginning in 1990. This collaboration broadened Botti’s experience, leading to performances and recordings with artists such as Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, and Joni Mitchell. His debut solo album, “First Wish,” was released in 1995, followed by “Midnight Without You” in 1997 and “Slowing Down the World” in 1999, which featured collaborations with Sting and Jonatha Brooke. In the late 1990s, Botti was also a member of Bruford Levin Upper Extremities, exploring a more experimental jazz fusion sound.
In 1999, Botti joined Sting’s “Brand New Day” tour as a featured soloist, a two-year engagement that culminated in a webcast performance from Sting’s Tuscan estate in 2001. This association marked a significant turning point in his career, solidifying his reputation. His move to Columbia Records in the early 2000s under the guidance of producer Bobby Colomby led to a string of successful albums, including “Night Sessions” (2001), “December” (2002), “A Thousand Kisses Deep” (2003), and “When I Fall in Love” (2004). His album “To Love Again: The Duets” (2005) garnered a Grammy Award in 2006 for the instrumental arrangement of “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” featuring Sting. Botti continued to achieve critical and commercial success, with four albums reaching No. 1 on the Billboard jazz albums chart, including his 2012 album “Impressions,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2013.
