About

Train formed in San Francisco in 1993, with original members Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford, Scott Underwood, and Charlie Colin. The band gained initial recognition with their self-titled debut album in 1998, featuring the hit single “Meet Virginia.” This track entered the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 20, and contributed to the album’s platinum certification by the RIAA. Their early years saw them touring nationally, opening for established acts like Barenaked Ladies and Counting Crows, building a foundation for their future success and growing fan base.

The band achieved significant mainstream success with their 2001 album, “Drops of Jupiter.” The lead single, “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” became an international hit, earning 9x platinum certification from the RIAA and winning two Grammy Awards in 2002: Best Rock Song and Best Arrangement. The album itself was certified double platinum, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 and number eight in the United Kingdom. Following some lineup changes, including the departures of Hotchkiss and Colin, and a three-year hiatus, Train regrouped in 2009. They released “Save Me, San Francisco,” which spawned the 13x platinum-certified international hit “Hey, Soul Sister,” and the singles “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me,” both reaching the Billboard Hot 100. This period marked a significant comeback, cementing their status in popular music.

Train continued releasing successful albums and singles through the 2010s. “California 37” (2012) featured the top 10 hit “Drive By,” and “Bulletproof Picasso” (2014) also achieved a top five position on the Billboard 200. The band explored new creative avenues with “Christmas in Tahoe” (2015), a holiday album, and “Train Does Led Zeppelin II” (2016), a song-for-song cover album. Their 2017 album, “A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat,” included the single “Play That Song,” which utilized the melody of the 1938 song “Heart and Soul.” Their most recent studio album, “AM Gold,” was released in 2022. Throughout their career, Train has sold over 10 million albums and 30 million tracks globally, demonstrating their lasting appeal and consistent output of popular music.
