Unwound was formed in 1988 in Tumwater and Olympia, Washington, by Justin Trosper (vocals-guitar) and Vern Rumsey (bass) under the initial name “Giant Henry.” Brandt Sandeno was the band’s first drummer. The group, known for its sharply dissonant and angular style, progressed through various names, including Cygnus X-1, before settling on Unwound. In July 1992, Sara Lund replaced Sandeno on drums, solidifying the classic trio lineup. Based largely in Olympia, the band quickly garnered attention for their relentless touring, preference for all-ages venues, and strong DIY ethics. Their debut album, “Fake Train” (1993), marked the first non-spoken word release for Kill Rock Stars, a label with which they became closely associated throughout the 1990s.
Throughout their initial run, Unwound released seven albums, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated cult following. Key milestones include “Repetition” (1996) and “Challenge for a Civilized Society” (1998), which showcased their evolving sound. Their self-produced double album, “Leaves Turn Inside You” (2001), saw a stylistic shift into post-rock and avant-garde territory and was widely praised. However, a challenging U.S. tour following its release, compounded by internal issues including Vern Rumsey’s struggles with alcoholism and geographical differences among members, led to the band’s dissolution in 2002.
After a 20-year hiatus, Unwound reunited in 2022. Following Rumsey’s death in 2020, Trosper and Lund reformed the band for a 2023 tour in his memory, enlisting Jared Warren on bass and Scott Seckington on guitar. This reunion was met with significant enthusiasm, highlighting their enduring influence and unique contribution to post-hardcore and indie rock. The band continues to tour nationally and internationally, revisiting their catalog and engaging with both long-time fans and new audiences.
