Vacationer is an American electro-dream pop and psychedelic pop band based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band was formed by Kenny Vasoli, who primarily handles songwriting, alongside members Ryan Zimmaro (drums), Michael Mullin (keyboards/backing vocals), and Greg Altman (guitar/backing vocals). Vasoli initiated the project in 2010, expressing interest in creating electronic music after being inspired by acts at the Bonnaroo Festival. His manager connected him with the band Body Language, leading to the establishment of a musical relationship and the creation of their first songs at Landau Audio Design (LAD) in Brooklyn. The band’s early instrumental recordings were developed through email exchanges, with Vasoli adding vocals and bass. The unique tropical sound of their music emerged from Young’s collection of Exotica, Polynesian, Hawaiian, and Tropicalia records.
In April 2011, Vacationer self-released their lead song, “Trip.” This generated significant interest, leading to the band signing with Downtown Records. Their debut LP, “Gone,” was released in 2012 and reached number 42 on the Top Heatseekers chart in the U.S. Following this, Vacationer embarked on extensive touring throughout 2012 and early 2013, performing with notable artists such as Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Bombay Bicycle Club, Tennis, The Naked and Famous, Body Language, and Niki and the Dove. The band continued to evolve its sound, releasing their second studio album, “Relief,” in June 2014, which charted at number 10 on the Top Heatseekers chart.
Vacationer released their third studio album, “Mindset,” on Downtown Records in June 2018. The following year, in September 2019, they released an instrumental album titled “Wavelengths” on Paxico Records, showcasing their versatility and experimental approach to music. Their fifth studio album, “Cherish,” was released on Paxico Records in October 2023, featuring the single “Dialogue” and further solidifying their presence in the electro-dream pop genre. Throughout their career, Vacationer has explored various musical themes and collaborations, including a notable partnership involving a signature cannabis strain, demonstrating their engagement beyond traditional music releases.
